Danger of face mask in Lagos state

Lagos state has recorded the most number of confirmed case of the dreadful Covid-19 virus that has affected the world

The state has recorded about three time the cases of other states in Nigeria and the state government are taking every possible measure to fight against the virus

The governor of Lagos state Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed a compulsory use of face mask in the state from Monday 27 of April

As a result is this order, the face mask business has become a serious business as most tailors have started making local ones with different designs

While some people sell for N100, some sell for N400, it all depend on the tailor and the quality

It's a good move by the government but the serious problem there is that, people now hawk this mask on the street without even wrapping them, exposing the mask to dust

Another issue is that, many ignorant people buy this mask from the person hawking them and just wear it immediately, which is a very dangerous thing to do, looking at the rate of coronavirus cases we have in the state

This is because, a lady who bought the mask from a guy hawking it, during the process of looking for a colour that she likes, touched almost all the mask before selecting one

Then I asked myself, what if she has the virus on her hand? Automatically she has contaminated all the mask she touched, then the next person to buy the face mask will just wear it, a mask that is suppose to protect you, becomes what will infect you

It is good to allow locally made mask because this will make the mask available and affordable but this people hawking this mask, need to be educated as regards the virus and how to protect the mask while selling them

Because most of this people hawking the mask believe that once you have the mask, you are safe but what they don't have at the back of their mind is that, the mask itself can be contaminated

This is why you have to be careful when buying face mask and it is also advisable that, when you buy the locally made mask, you wash it before using it
